Chapter Nine

One month later, as Neil was walking home from a new gym he'd joined only three blocks away from his condo, he stumbled into a situation he couldn't have portended if he'd tried. He'd stepped off the curb and was about to cross the street where he lived when he saw his voyeuristic young neighbor from across the alley smash head first into the tree in front of his townhouse. When he hit the tree, he went headfirst over the handlebars and landed on his side.

There weren't many people on the street that Saturday afternoon, and those who were there continued walking, pretending nothing had happened. One guy in tight low-rise jeans who'd been walking his dog bent down, picked up the dog, and stepped right over Neil's neighbor.

Neil ran across the street and dropped his gym bag next to the bike. Then he went over to his neighbor and reached down to help him to his feet. “Are you okay? I saw the whole thing. I've never seen anyone go airborne quite that way before. I was afraid you might wind up in the East River.”

The guy's face had turned a bright shade of pink. “I'm good,” he said. “I don't think anything's broken.” He took Neil's hands and stood up fast, then started hopping on the balls of his feet and straightening out his clothes. His hands moved fast with awkward, nervous gestures. He didn't look into Neil's eyes once.

Neil smiled and checked him out. He wore navy blue basketball shorts with white stripes down the sides and a white sweatshirt, and blue and white cross-training shoes with short white ankle socks. Neil hadn't seen him lurking in the window in a while. He'd let his brown hair grow longer—parted in the center, all one length, pulled back behind his ears—and he'd grown one of those scruffy light beards. In a Jesus way, he was much better-looking up close than he was from across the alley.

Neil looked down at the guy's left leg. He'd scraped it on the sidewalk and it was bleeding. It wasn't a bad cut, but Neil pointed to his leg and said, “You'd better come inside and let me take care of that.”

“Are you a doctor?”

Neil laughed. “No. I work with kids. I'm used to dealing with this sort of thing all the time.” Neil couldn't stop gaping at his sexy fuzzy legs. He was much taller than Neil had expected, over six feet. And Neil hadn't been with anyone since he'd last seen Andre the night of Blaine's and Puzzie's wedding.

But the guy seemed apprehensive. “I'm fine. It's nothing, man.” He kept looking down at the sidewalk and he seemed to not know where to put his hands.

Neil suspected he was uncomfortable because he'd been spying on Neil since he'd moved in next door, and he didn't know Neil knew that. So Neil reached for his bike and picked it up off the sidewalk. He reached for his gym bag and said, “C'mon.
